It seems a significant difference between the old and new testament people is the visibilty of God's covenant with His people. In the old testament, there were the Jews, and the evil nations that needed to be conquered. You joined the good guys and killed the bad guys. Arranged marraiges worked quite well- since you just found a fellow Jew and talked with the parents and made it happen.
So now with this invisible covenant of faith in Jesus, we fight against the spiritual realm and don't need to kill people anymore, since they might soon be part of the good guys.
Not sure exactly how all of these things come together, but it makes trying to live Ephesians 6 an exciting challenge.
