Let's start with some definitions here.
-Fulfill:
1. | to carry out, or bring to realization, as a prophecy or promise. |
2. | to perform or do, as duty; obey or follow, as commands. |
3. | to satisfy (requirements, obligations, etc.) |
-The Scripture: Old testament written prophecies, history and poetry. Our modern Old Testament
-Partiality (also vs 1 of same chapter)
1. | the state or character of being partial. |
2. | a favorable bias or prejudice: the partiality of parents for their own children. |
3. | a special fondness, preference, or liking |
-The law: This is based on Scripture where some of God's standards are specifically recorded.
-Transgressors: People whom have broken the rules given by the law (of God).
And from here we can feel the full implications of this passage in our lives more clearly.
So is James talking about how we ourselves can earn our salvation here? If we can fulfill the law, this would mean we, without help can with our own skills and resourcefulness be perfect before God. But this is impossible. So is James talking about what we are doing or what we have effectually gained in Christ's death at calvary? No, since Jesus never committed partiality and these two states are clearly contrasted with each other.
Our aim, then, needs to be to love people. And James shows us that if we treat people lovingly based on their status, we are missing the point and not really loving them. But he doesn't just leave it at this. We are more than incomplete in our love, but guilty of breaking His Royal Law. Which deserves Royal Punishment.......
'I deserve nothing good and only punishment. Though there are more things I could do even more poorly, there are also so many ways I could be better. Please help me not be so complacent knowing that I am not going to be sanctified in a moment but over a lifetime, and not to be self-righteous when there is an echo of goodness that proceeds from my mouth. First off, this wouldn't be the case without your grace, and second off, I am already too introspective. Turn My eyes upon Jesus. Amen'
