James 3:1 "Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness."
Just looking back on the past few verses, the transition seems rather abrupt. First he is talking about faith without works being dead, and now teaching? Interesting.
Let's define some terms to make sure we aren't missing anything.
Teachers: One who imparts knowledge to others, one who instructs others
Judged: A final decision is made here. There are different judgements though. The first is whether or not we trust in Jesus for our Justification. The second is Jesus judging those who did in fact follow him, but looking back on how they lived in light of this reality. The judging of the works belonging to the real faith in him.
Strictness: To whom much is given, much is required.
This section raises an interesting question about what this judgment is actually going to be like. On a more practical level for today, makes me want to be more intentional about the things I do. Do my daily priorities line up with eternity in any way at all?
This also raises the question, what is behind (my) desire to teach? If it something besides the good of the student, it is very dangerous territory. Not only will there be more severe consequences, but this will also affect the students adversely...
Another heart check from James, not stopping at the surface of what we look like on the outside, but getting back to our motivations for doing those things we do.
I want to be more intentional about my time each day, and stop meandering and winding about through life, and so help me in an effort to be more disciplined and to be more focused. I lift up leaders in Campus outreach, staff and student leadership. Guard these hearts against an introspective, self- exalting spirit. Quicken hearts to be concerned for the well being of these eternal beings. I don't want myself or these leaders to be double minded. Convict us of specific sins please oh Father. Thank you. In the name of your glorious and beloved son, Amen
