Four score and five years ago, plus 2 months, minus 4 score....
I began 2 rather life defining activities. Work and college (at the U).
Work began the Monday after school at Staub Pediatric, right across the river near the West bank. And after 4 long years of blood sweat and tears, I scraped my way through several science and engineering courses. It wasn't pretty, but there was a graduation gown and a diploma at the end (not to mention the battle wounds of poor marks, the burden of past procrastinations and the shame of a low GPA)
So, what on earth crossed my mind? I mean, college is supposed to be tough, but I think fighting a cold war opponent would have been more straightforward...
Tips for those in or soon to be in college.
-You don't need to focus on a social life. This will take care of itself. Trust me.
-Friday afternoon (study) power hour before everyone starts hanging out- just an hour- 330- 430 works
-Master something. If you don't know what to go into, look at what interests you and what you are good at. You should come out being an expert in your studies.
-Pick something practical and helpful.
So, though I have a Bachelor's of Materials Engineering and Science, I am a receptionist at the Children's Clinic. Were I to do something that I enjoyed at a votech school, my bank account would be about 80,000 dollars heavier, but it is OK. I wouldn't accept a million bucks instead of being discipled by Paul Poteat and Andrew Knight.
I like my job, and I'm thankful for it sometimes. I just wish I would have been a good steward of the opportunity. And it will be OK. Don't be a slave to school either. Don't go bananas and swing the other way. Just be normal. Hard working. Determined. Curious. All those good things you know. You may be disappointed.
